Union intends to launch legal action against Transport for London

27 August 2025

GMB Union – which represents thousands of private hire drivers – has today [Wednesday 16 July] announced its intention to take legal action against Transport for London (TfL).

The claim relates the financial impact of TfL’s licencing delays on private hire drivers.

The delays in processing licence renewal requests caused significant financial hardship for many drivers as they were left unable to work – in some cases for months at a time.

Dozens of members have come forward to join a potential action and seek compensation for lost earnings.

The union believes that, if the case were successful, these drivers could be entitled to substantial compensation.

GMB has notified TfL and received an acknowledgement from the Commissioner.

Kola Olalekan, GMB Professional Driver Branch Secretary, said:

“Many of our members suffered a significant impact on their livelihoods.

“We have heard their concerns loud and clear, and we intend to take action to recover the losses they have unjustly incurred.

“When our members face hardship, we act.”
